Madagascar Vanilla beans are known as Bourbon vanilla. Bourbon vanilla is the term used for vanilla from the islands in the Indian Ocean such as Sri Lanka, Madagascar.
Vanilla is a variety of orchid plant and it is the second most expensive spices in the world. Labor involvement is very high in the cultivation and the plant is growing well in the high land side in Sri Lanka.
Madagascar vanilla beans are sweet, creamy and aromatic. So, This vanilla is excellent for flavoring, extraction, baking, cosmetics production and other culinary uses.
Vanilla is shade loving plant and the supportive trees are using to adequate shade (50-60%). Vanilla cultivated in some parts of Sri Lanka, mainly in Kandy, Matale, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya etc.
How to identify good quality Madagascar vanilla beans,
Inherited vanilla smell/ sweet, creamy and aromatic, Dark brown or black color, Soft/Shiny oily surface on the beans.
and also the good quality beans flexible and roll between your two fingers. You should be able to tie a knot without breaking the bean. If it breaks, that’s because the bean is too dry. Do the test and select the best beans!
